• Aspen Accord Overview

The Aspen Accord is an energy policy forum where cities, utilities, regulators and end users collaborate to identify problems and propose solutions to our most pressing energy issues. In accordance with the Accords Charter, members are dedicated to:

"The efficient use of energy as vital to the long term prosperity of our communities, our respective nations and the world"

Established in 1994, the Aspen Accord is a venue for cities to work together and share ideas to help one another address regional energy problems. Early participants included the Californian cities of Santa Monica and Irvine, as well as the Swedish cities of Nacka and Göteborg, and combined utility and government officials. Over the years, the Aspen Accord has added executives and officials from utilities, regulatory bodies, non-profit and advocacy groups, and more cities from Sweden and California to advance energy and demand resource efficiency management.

The Accord forges partnerships between regions and stakeholders to support the California State Energy Action Plan, transforming the relationship between energy consumers and utilities to offset the procurement of new supply side resources and promote long term energy efficiency, demand response, and environmental sustainability.

The Accord is a creative and aggressive venue for new ideas and demonstration projects supporting the mission of The Energy Coalition. Some of the Coalition’s most effective partnerships, including the Community Energy Partnership, the Business Energy Coalition, and the Palm Desert Energy Partnership, have evolved from Aspen Accord ideas.
