Energy Benchmarking Training — City of Irvine

What is Energy Benchmarking Training?

Building energy performance benchmarking compares the energy use of a building or groups of buildings with similar structures or looks at how energy use varies from a baseline measure. It informs businesses about how and where they use energy and what factors drive their energy use.

TEC provides building owners and managers with hands-on, comprehensive knowledge of how to benchmark buildings using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manger to comply with AB1103.

California Assembly Bill 1103 requires the disclosure of a nonresidential building’s energy performance at the time of sale, lease or refinancing. This law specifies that the building owner must use EPA’s ENERGY STAR™ Portfolio Manager to generate a “California Energy Performance Disclosure Report” to the prospective buyer, lessee or lender.

The Portfolio Manager is a no cost, secure, web based energy management tool that benchmarks and tracks energy and water consumption across an entire portfolio of buildings.

Who are the Partners?

In 2010, TEC partnered with the City of Irvine, the EPA, BOMA of Orange County, the Irvine Ranch Water District and the Cadmus Group to offer benchmarking training to local building owners, operators and managers.

What are the Outcomes?

With tools, guidance, experience and expertise in building performance, businesses can reduce their energy use by 30% or more through more accountable energy management practices.

Building managers learn how to use the tool to identify under performing buildings, verify energy efficiency improvements and earn EPA recognition for superior energy performance compared to similar facilities across the country.

Attendees also earn about resources to help building owners and leasing companies increase their ability to implement projects that save energy, water and operating expenses.
