Through TEC’s work creating advanced energy communities, we’ve noticed a critical gap in many energy programs: renters often miss out on the benefits of clean technologies. Pomona ACTS, our initiative to uplift community efforts and build a thriving, sustainable future for Pomona, California, is bridging this divide. And we’re excited to share some fantastic news!
Pomona ACTS Appliance Giveaway Pilot Phase a Success!
Our first Pomona ACTS initiative, an appliance giveaway program funded through the Department of Energy Community Energy Innovation Prize, addressed this issue. Renters in Pomona often lack control over the appliances in their homes, making it difficult to adopt options that save energy and minimize indoor air pollution. Our pilot program delivered free, energy-efficient, and safe appliances—portable air conditioners, electric kettles, portable batteries, air purifiers, and more—to ten local renter households.
This initiative tackled multiple challenges faced by Pomona residents: extreme heat, poor indoor air quality, power outages, and high energy bills. The program has not only helped residents stay cool and improve air quality but also empowered them to reduce their environmental footprint. “I am grateful for the energy-efficient appliances from Pomona ACTS,” said Liz G., a Pomona resident and appliance giveaway participant. “I look forward to reducing our energy usage and saving on costs.”
Expanding Our Impact: Additional $100,000 Grant!
Based on the success of our pilot phase, TEC has been awarded an additional $100,000 ($200,000 total to date) from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Community Energy Innovation Prize! This incredible recognition and funding will allow us to develop a program protocol, including best practices and lessons learned, so communities across the country can replicate this direct-to-renter clean energy model.
Looking Ahead: A New Phase for Pomona ACTS
This prestigious grant allows us to enter a new, exciting phase for Pomona ACTS. We’ll continue our work on clean energy access for renters, with the goal of reaching even more households. We anticipate reaching at least 180 additional renters, empowering them to save money and live in healthier, more sustainable homes. This will contribute to a cleaner environment for the entire community, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a more sustainable future for Pomona.
Get Involved!
TEC is immensely grateful to our dedicated partners in this initiative: Day One, the Latino/a Roundtable of the San Gabriel Valley and Pomona Valley, the City of Pomona, and Pomona Choice Energy.
