We are thrilled to share a major milestone for The Energy Coalition (TEC): we have officially been accredited as an observer to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)!
Following a rigorous, months-long application and review process, this designation awards TEC formal observer status to the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and its vital subsidiary bodies, including the Committee of Permanent Representatives.
For over 50 years, TEC has partnered with California communities to turn visionary energy goals into sustainable, real-world action. Earning accreditation from a leading global authority like the United Nations is a testament to TEC’s deep credibility, impactful track record, and the alignment of our work with UN goals. It underscores that our local initiatives support broader, global sustainability mandates.
What is a UNEP Observer?
To engage in UNEP’s intergovernmental decision-making processes, organizations must apply to be accredited by the UN Environment Assembly. Once approved, accredited organizations become “observers” to the UNEA and its subsidiary bodies and are categorized under one of nine “Major Groups” of stakeholders.
Major Groups and Stakeholders have been key contributors to the implementation of the mandate of the United Nations Environment Programme. Accredited organizations (like TEC!) actively contribute to global environmental policy and decision-making.
TEC is proud to join the NGO Major Group—the most diverse Major Group and a distinguished community of engaged civil society actors.
What This Means Going Forward
Accreditation serves as the primary entry point for non-governmental organizations into international policy dialogue at UNEP. Moving forward, TEC gains a formal voice in global arenas where international clean energy agendas and sustainable development strategies are directly shaped.
Through this designation, our organization will have the opportunity to:
- Weigh In on Policy Dialogue: Contribute directly to the preparation of Regional Civil Society Statements and submit written feedback on unedited UN working documents.
- Participate in High-Level Assemblies: Attend plenary sessions of the United Nations Environment Assembly, the Committee of Permanent Representatives, and the Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum.
- Engage International Leaders: Collaborate with attending governments, policymaking bodies, and global organizations to champion equity-driven clean energy solutions.
While this milestone opens exciting new pathways for high-level policy dialogue, our core focus remains the same: building an affordable, accessible, and resilient clean energy future for everyone.
