San Diego is leading the charge toward a sustainable future with the recent approval of the San Diego Regional Energy Network (SDREN)!
This groundbreaking initiative, championed by San Diego Community Power (SDCP), San Diego County, and supported by The Energy Coalition, will accelerate the region’s transition to an equitable clean energy future.
SDCP, a community choice aggregator, led a community-driven effort that built on years of momentum toward establishing a REN in the region. They saw the region’s need for programs to support decarbonization and prepare the region’s 3.3 million residents for the impacts of climate change. The SDREN’s portfolio of programs was designed to empower communities, particularly those underserved and hard-to-reach, to embrace clean energy solutions.
TEC’s Role
TEC is proud to have played a pivotal role in bringing the SDREN to fruition. Our deep expertise in regional energy networks, honed through our work on the Southern California Regional Energy Network and with other RENs throughout the state, helped us to guide SDCP through the complex process of developing and securing approval for the SDREN. We provided a market assessment, program design, and regulatory support to help SDCP achieve their goal and establish the new REN for the San Diego region.
What’s Next
The CPUC’s approval of the SDREN unlocks over $100 million in funding through 2027 for local energy programs. This investment will support a wide range of initiatives, including:
- Incentives for businesses to adopt energy-efficient practices
- Energy efficiency programs for small businesses, residents, and local agencies
- Tribal-led initiatives to promote sustainability and economic development
- Workforce training and career development opportunities
- Support for local permitting agencies to streamline energy code compliance
TEC is excited to continue working with SDCP and other partners to bring these programs to life. We envision a San Diego where clean energy is affordable and accessible to all, where businesses thrive, and where communities are healthy and prosperous.
The SDREN’s approval is a testament to San Diego Community Power’s commitment to investing in Communities of Concern, growing a regional clean energy economy with opportunities for the local workforce, and becoming a trusted resource for local and regional policy, partnerships, and programs. Join us in celebrating this momentous achievement and supporting the SDREN as it transforms our region! You can learn more about TEC’s work with RENs here.
