The Energy Coalition is making connections around the globe! Last month, Executive Director Craig Perkins, Director of Energy Innovation Genaro Bugarin, and Director of Policy and Planning Marc Costa met with representatives from Distro Energy and TSI Group at the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
At the meeting, they discussed grid reliability, electrification, and transactive energy marketplace software for the Port of Rotterdam. The port to electrify and decarbonize its own operations and to scale up low carbon ports worldwide, with the help of Distro Energy and TSI Group. To support its clean energy efforts, the port is interested in using behavior change strategies and energy trading to improve its electrical grid capacity.
A few of our biggest takeaways from the meeting were:
- Industrial hubs around the world, such as the Port of Rotterdam, are already using software solutions to proactively manage energy use
- Technology pilot programs can help solve today’s problems: For the Port of Rotterdam, what started as a pilot project quickly evolved into a critical solution when they needed to reduce energy consumption on their maxed-out electrical grid
- With the help of transactive energy software, the port was able to reduce their energy use enough to proceed with carbon reduction and electrification projects without costly upgrades to their grid infrastructure. Ultimately, they were able to meet their carbon and electrification goals through energy management.
TEC was happy to learn about the Port of Rotterdam from Distro Energy and TSI Group, and to share our expertise in transactive energy pilot projects back in the United States. We’re excited to continue discussions and help bring energy trading software like that at the Port of Rotterdam to the United States!
